An Anniversary in San Blas: Ideas for a Day to Remember

Three ways to mark an anniversary in Guna Yala, from a private boat for two to a small-group VIP day, plus ideas that make the date feel truly yours.

An anniversary trip carries a particular kind of pressure. It is not the first big trip together, so it has to mean something different, and it often has to fit inside a busy life: a long weekend, a stopover, a few days in Panama squeezed between work and family. A day in Guna Yala suits that brief well. It is one day, it asks very little planning from you, and it gives you something that is hard to find in most celebrations, which is hours of uninterrupted time together.

This guide sets out three ways to spend that day, depending on what kind of couple you are, and a handful of ideas that make it feel like your anniversary rather than any day at the beach.

Option one: the boat is yours

If the point of the trip is time alone, the Private Day for Two is the obvious choice. The boat, a dedicated captain and a Guna guide are reserved for the two of you, and the plan bends to the occasion. You might spend the morning on a quiet island, stop to snorkel when the water is calm and stretch the afternoon on an empty sandbar.

It suits couples who already know each other’s rhythm and want a day without compromise: no waiting for others to get back on board, no fixed timetable, no need to make conversation with strangers. Tell us on WhatsApp that it is your anniversary when you book; it is a small thing, and it means the crew knows before you arrive.

Option two: a small group, a fuller day

Some couples prefer company and a sense of discovery. The VIP Day visits four islands and the Piscina Natural sandbar, and caps the boat at ten guests, so it never feels crowded. You snorkel over the sunken wreck at Isla Perro Chico, walk the sand at Isla Diablo, Isla Pelícano and Isla Aguja, and stand waist-deep in the Piscina Natural.

In the afternoon a guide from the community walks you through an inhabited Guna village: homes, mola needlework and the daily rhythm of an island that is not a resort. For couples who have been together a long time, that change of perspective can be the most memorable part of the day. It is a reminder of how many ways there are to build a life.

Option three: the water couple

If your best days together have been spent underwater, consider the outer reef. Cayos Holandeses VIP takes no more than eight guests to the clearest water in Guna Yala. The ride is longer, and it is the reason the water out there is so transparent. With a small group, the guide can take everyone to the better snorkel spots instead of moving a crowd, and lunch is served on one of the cays.

Ideas that make it personal

The islands do most of the work. A few small touches turn a beautiful day into an anniversary.

Bring something from the beginning

A photo from your first trip together, the playlist from your wedding on a phone in a waterproof pouch, a letter written before you left home. Small, light and easy to carry in a dry bag.

Plan a toast, the Guna Yala way

You are welcome to bring your own drinks for a toast, as long as they are in cans or plastic. Glass is not allowed on the boat. Lunch on the island includes a drink, so a toast at lunch is easy to arrange.

Choose an hour with no plan

Ask your captain for one stop where you simply stay put: no snorkeling, no walking, just shade and sand. On an anniversary, an hour with nothing scheduled is the real luxury.

Bring home something made there

If you are on the VIP Day and molas are offered in the community, a mola bought from the people who make it is a far better keepsake than anything from an airport shop. Ask your guide how it is done.

Fitting it into a short trip

An anniversary trip is often a short one. A few practical notes help the day slot in.

  • Stay in Panama City the night before. Pickup is at 5:00 AM from your hotel in a 4x4. The early start is what gives you the whole day on the water instead of half of it on the road.
  • Keep the evening light. After the boat brings you back to the coast and the 4x4 drives you to the city, you will want an easy dinner rather than a late night.
  • Bring passports and cash. Original passports are checked at the entrance to Guna Yala, and the community’s entry tax is not included in any of our experiences; it is paid in cash on the day. The current amount is on our FAQ page.

A note on respect

Guna Yala is governed by the Guna community, which has its own rules. If you are taking photographs, ask before you photograph people, and follow your guide’s lead in the village. A celebration is better when the people hosting it are treated as hosts.

Choosing between them

If you are unsure, ask yourselves one question: on this anniversary, do you want to be alone together, or together among others? If it is the first, go private; our page on private charters shows the three private options side by side. If it is the second, the small-group VIP Day gives you more islands, a village and a few new faces at lunch. Either way you are in good hands: our travelers rate us 4.9 on average, from more than 2,000 of them.

FAQ

Can we celebrate our anniversary on a shared boat?

Yes. The VIP Day and Cayos Holandeses VIP are small-group experiences with a cap of ten and eight guests. Let us know it is your anniversary and the crew will know the occasion.

Is there a private option for couples?

The Private Day for Two reserves the boat, captain and Guna guide for one couple, with the route planned around you on the morning.

Can we bring a cake or a gift?

Yes, you can bring your own small cake, gift or drinks. Drinks must be in cans or plastic, because glass is not allowed on the boat.
